Knowing your past to appreciate your present is key to a better future. - A.W.G

On October 1, 1878, 30 years after Emancipation,  the tempers of laborers on the island of St. Croix reached a boiling point.  Enraged about their mistreatment, their current living conditions, and employment, in an orchestrated move they began to set the island ablaze, setting fire to the town of Frederiksted, sugar mills, houses, and fields island-wide. This day lives on in history as the Fireburn.

Each week, Anonymous West Gyul will feature the direct descendants of the people of The 1878 Fireburn. In order to create an imperishable future, we must remember them as we look ahead and honor their legacy.
